Pool or Hot Tub Not Working Right? Here's When to Call a Pro

Every pool and hot tub owner eventually runs into a problem. Sometimes it's minor — a clogged skimmer basket, a tripped breaker. Sometimes it's something that needs a professional before it turns into a much bigger (and more expensive) issue.

After 20+ years of servicing pools and spas across Durham Region, we've seen it all. Here's a practical guide to help you figure out what you can handle yourself, and when to pick up the phone.

Problems You Can Usually Handle Yourself

Clogged skimmer baskets or pump baskets: Turn off the pump, remove the basket, clear the debris, reinstall. Easy.

Tripped breaker: If your pump or heater stops working, check your breaker panel first. A single trip is usually not a concern. Repeated trips mean something's drawing too much power, that's a call to us.

Cloudy or green water: Usually a chemistry issue. Test your water, adjust your chemicals, run your filter. If it doesn't clear in 48–72 hours, bring a water sample in.

Low water level: Top up with a garden hose. If you're losing more than 1/4 inch per day, you may have a leak, see below.

Dirty filter: Backwash your sand filter or rinse/soak your cartridge filter. Refer to your owner's manual for frequency.

Problems That Need a Professional

Leaks: A pool or hot tub that's losing water faster than evaporation can account for has a leak somewhere. Finding it requires pressure testing and, sometimes, dye testing. Don't ignore it, leaks get worse and can undermine your pool structure or deck.

Pump not priming or running dry: If your pump is running but not moving water, something is blocking suction or there's an air leak in the line. Running a pump dry damages the seals quickly.

Heater not firing: Gas heater issues involve combustion components and gas lines. This is not a DIY repair.

Error codes on your spa control panel: Modern hot tubs have diagnostic systems. Some error codes are simple (low water flow = dirty filter). Others indicate sensor failures or control board issues that need a technician.

Electrical issues: Any time you're dealing with wiring, connections, or GFCI problems near water, call a professional. This is a safety issue, not just a technical one.

Cracked fittings or plumbing: A small crack can become a big leak fast. We can diagnose and repair plumbing issues before they cause structural damage.

Don't Wait Until It's an Emergency

The most expensive repairs we see are ones that started small and got ignored. A pump that's running rough, a heater that's slow to fire, a fitting that's weeping a little — these are all signs that something needs attention before it fails completely.

Give us a call or stop by our showroom at 37 Main Street North, Uxbridge. We'll give you an honest assessment and a straight answer, no upselling, no unnecessary service calls.
